Julie Andrews

Julie Andrews

Julie Andrews, She danced on the hills as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music and won an Oscar for her role as the most magical of the world’s nanny in Mary Poppins, but Julie Andrews has been on a roll, that is the antithesis of everything she has done.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” Andrews smiles. The 74-year-old blue eyes twinkle as she leans in, ads: “This lady is so terrible, it’s delicious. I think they are completely out to lunch on the way she is selfish. She is totally self-absorbed. ”

The woman of whom she speaks is Marlena, the mother of the blatant Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), a villain whose main goal in life is to steal the moon in abject me, a computer-animated film that also the voice talents of Jason Segel and Kristen Wiig.

While planning his heist, Gru realizes the only way he can to steal the moon to establish three orphan girls who sell cookies to his archenemy, Vector (Segel). While the girls in the house of the Vector, Gru plans to steal the shrink ray he needs to complete his nasty plan.

At Andrews agreed with the film, her character was not even a name.

“I thought ‘what a pleasure’ when I heard that they do not have a name. When we started, I was asked if I would like her name. I said:” She obviously thinks she’s the cat’s whiskers, so I think I call her Marlena. ”

Andrews says she came up with the accent for her character after she heard a demo of the voice Carell as Gru. “I just could not make use of a Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins kind of voice for her,” says Andrews.

“I felt something was Eastern European accent and I thought, as his mother, I felt I had to have an influence. His voice must have flipped me, to some extent.”

What accent Gru, Carell seems flattered that they Andrews as Eastern Europe.

“Is that what she said? “Carell laughs, such as Metro takes him later in the day.

“I have no idea what kind of accent was. It’s kind of a conglomerate of Russian, Italian, German and French. He is a discreet bad guy. But then, he also got a side to him, not so bad. I would like to think of him as a loving man with a heart of bronze. ”

The dark comedy has grossed $ US300 edges million ($ 333 million) and counting and Carell believes its formula for success is simple.

“At the end of the day, children do not want all puppy dogs and ice cream,” he says. “Kids want a little intrigue and that’s why I wanted something threatening Gru.

“Things do not have children and it is important not condescending. I wanted the character a bit scary, because when he comes around, it’s a bit more worthwhile.”

From the very beginning, though, Carell says he does not think of me, as a children’s despicable.

“Not at all,” he says. “For me it was more a matter of making a good movie instead of a kids’ movie.”

Carell should know. The 48-year-old comedian has two children, Elizabeth, 9, and John, 6, and his wife of 15 years, Nancy. In the film, Gru’s cold heart thaws as he grows with the children he has adopted. Having children, Carell says, will do that for you.

“I’ve seen this movie twice and even in spite of myself, I cried both times,” he says.

“The second time I went,” Um, I do not cry. ” But when Gru the story at bedtime to read to children, it gets me every time, because that’s what I do. I read a story to my children every night. My wife and I play with our voice and it’s the best part of our lives. ”

Tears begin to well in his eyes. “See!” Carell laughs. “Until you have kids, you do not know. It does change you. You can not help it.”

Lee Mi Yeon

Lee Mi Yeon, The internet team has done it again, and this time have found a celebrity who did charity work abroad with a rotten attitude.

On day 5, Chosun Journal published a special article entitled “The Lights and shadows of the famous Social Work” and reported that a female actress called ‘A’ went 5-night, the relief effort six-day overseas in the Central Asia earlier this year at the suggestion of a company magazine.

She was in business class and stayed in a hotel on your arrival, just go to visit children living in poverty when the cameras were rolling. An associate of a person in the place, said: “A ssi-brought his manager, stylist and makeup and hair artists, who also came on the seats of business. She refused to leave their hotel and ate only food he had brought from Korea, separated from one another. The last day, her manager came down and asked us to find sushi sashimi for her. ”

One plan was to create a meal planned for children the same. Unfortunately, he cut his finger in the middle of the kitchen, forcing designers to step forward and heated instant rice packs. Finished feeding children instant rice with curry on top.

‘A’ also smoked around children frequently. “Someone at the scene had to ask other places to smoke, that’s how bad it is. I think she mistook the charity work of some kind of fashion shoot.”

She soon returned home to Korea and the segment was released next month in the magazine with his statement, “shared the pain of children and that fed them.” Images of ‘A’ caressing the children were on the next page.

Netizens immediately went to find the name of the actress in question by searching key phrases and criticizing the magazine for not releasing the name of the actress. Geauga County Fair

The Geauga County Fair was cool! Like COLD. But we enjoyed the food, saw a robot and talked with a lot of nice people. Emma got to talk to the Sportsmen about the giant bass she caught last week (daddy told her to make it sound bigger). Thanks Mr. Ryder for showing us around. We also saw Lake Erie whitecaps today-just like the ocean!

Colouring Book Theatre: The Dukes of Hazzard

Dukes of Hazzard" by Modern Publications
I'm going to preface today's CBT with the confession that I've little to no nostalgia for Dukes of Hazzard. I do not hate it or think people who like it are dumb, I just do not really dig it.

My fondest memory of the show is it became the subject of my 1st "dick move" as a child. When it 1st aired, my friend Neil and I began discussing it with another kid on the block who could be best described as "uptight". We went on about how cool it was, how he was missing out blah blah blah.

About a month later he came running up to us saying he had seen the Dukes and loved it. I simply said "That shows for babies" and went on about KISS records or something. If you are reading this Michael, I apologize, trust me when I say I got paid back in spades for that one.

Anyway, you might have noticed the cost on this sucker, $7.95 is pretty steap for a colouring book now, let alone 1980 but I want to preface this thing is thicker than my local telephone book. Let's take a look at the surprising insides after the jump.

Watch Live Pakistan vs England first T20 Pak Ing Cardiff 2010 Free Live Streaming Online Eng vs Pak T20 live here first. Pakistan will try to ignore the match-fixing scandal that the players are in England when they play in the first two T20Is in Cardiff.

England won the test series 3-1, but now there are question marks about the authenticity of the results, since there are rumors that some games have been fixed.

Pakistan can not play three of their players – Mohammad Amir Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt – in the eleven to play if the rumors are credible.

This is because the ECB and the ICC has been trying to force the Coordinating Board to suspend the three until proven otherwise.

On the other hand, England has some changes to their side too. Kevin Pietersen fell to the side, and despite his anger, there will be Steven Davies, who will take his place.

Davies also keep doors and that would mean that Craig Kieswetter could play as a drummer pure opening. With that kind of backdrop to this game, it is difficult to say that the game will be something that viewers will watch.

But one thing is sure: if someone wants Kamann Akmal plays games and lost one or two doses, the public will see a completely different point of view.

God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages. It makes me angry because I'm playing my best and they are trying to lose."

England-Pakistan series to go ahead: Team manager
CARDIFF: The first Twenty20 international between England and Pakistan was set to go ahead as planned on Sunday despite the latest allegations in the fixing controversy, Pakistan manager Yawar Saeed said.

The Pakistan team held an emergency meeting after The News of the World reported that a fourth player was being investigated over match-rigging allegations, leading to speculation that they could pull out of the series.

"We are going to the ground for the match and that means the series is on," Yawar told Geo Super Channel.

The newspaper quoted Pakistan batsman Yasir Hameed as saying that some of his team mates were fixing matches.

Hameed again denied making these allegations, even though the newspaper released a video of the interview with him.

"I was approached by this guy about a deal for sticker sponsorship on my bat. It was a general discussion and I just repeated what had already been published in the News of the World," Hameed said.

"I was tricked into this interview I never knew they were recording it which is a serious offence and I am talking to the Pakistan team management about it," he said.

Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were suspended by the International Cricket Council last week over spot-fixing allegations.

Shahid Afridi, who will captain Pakistan in the one-day series against England, apologised to his countrymen for the damage caused by the scandal.

"Pakistanis passionately love their cricket team and support us. I apologise to them and the rest of the cricket world for what has happened," he told Geo News channel.

"I can only ask for forgiveness on behalf of Salman, Asif and Aamer."

Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan told BBC Radio on Sunday that the trio should receive life bans if they are found guilty.

"If the News of the World evidence is correct then I would banish them from cricket," Hasan said.

Yasir Hameed claims colleagues fix ‘almost every match’ File Poto
Opener Yasir Hameed has reportedly claimed that his teammates were allegedly involved in fixing “almost every match”, even before the dust is yet to settle over the allegations of spot-fixing against three fellow players during the team’s tour in England.
This is among the new revelations made by British tabloid News of the World, whose disclosures last weekend rocked international cricket over allegations of spot-fixing involving large sums of money.
Yasir Hameed also reportedly claimed that he had been asked by a bookmaker to help fix a Test for 100,000 pound, but turned down the money.
After the disclosure, Yasir Hameed could face disciplinary proceedings from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for violating its anti-corruption code of conduct which states that it is an offence if a player “fails to disclose to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (without undue delay) full details of any approaches … that would amount to a breach of the anti—corruption code“.
Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt - have faced police investigation for allegedly delivering no-balls at pre-determined stages of the recent Lord’s Test at the behest of bookie Mazhar Majeed.
The tabloid adds that it will be revealed how the ICC was now probing a fourth Pakistan touring player over “match-rigging claims”. It is not naming this player for legal reasons.
“The three suspended Pakistan players face a staggering 23 ICC charges between them - each charge runs to six pages... Captain Salman Butt was warned five times about his responsibilities to report any irregular contact with outside agencies.”
The tabloid said its print edition will publish the “entire investigation starting in January this year including printing the transcripts of every meeting, conversation, email and text exchange“.
The newspaper published details of the spot-fixing claims last weekend which led Pakistan test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir to face police and ICC investigations.
Yasir Hameed reportedly said: “They’ve been caught. Only the ones that get caught are branded crooks. They were doing it [fixing] in almost every match. God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages. It makes me angry because I’m playing my best and they are trying to lose.” The print edition is today expected to carry reports that investigators recovered between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds of marked bank bills from Butt’s hotel room.

Choosing the Right Shade of Lipstick

Choosing the Right Shade of Lipstick File poto
Choosing the right shade of lipstick can be a tedious task for many women. Lip colors which look ravishing on the model might sometimes turn out to be a disaster once you try them on.

The fact is that not every color of lipstick suits everybody. The color of lipstick which is best suited for you depends on many factors.

There are many tips and tricks to choose that magical shade of lipstick.

The universal truth about lipsticks is that the most suitable and flattering color of lipstick which suits a person will be a shade or two darker than their natural lip colour.

The best  lip color for a person is determined largely by the skin tone of that person. For really fair and pink skinned girls, pinks, cherry reds and nudes will be the most suitable colors. For medium skinned girls a bit darker shade of lipstick will be more suitable .They should opt for shades like light burgundy. For dark skinned girls, chocolate, deep burgundy etc will be the optimum choices.

The shade of lipstick chosen by you should also depend on the size and shape of the lips. For thin lips use lighter and glossier shades. People with these type of lips should never ever opt for dark shades as they will make the already thin lips look even more thinner. People who have fuller lips should opt for darker shaded lipsticks.

Another factor to be considered while choosing the correct lip shade is coordinating them with your eye color. If the eye makeup is light, then you can go for heavy lip makeup. If both the eye makeup and lip make up are dark then the overall result will not be a very pleasant one to look at. The lip liner you apply should also coordinate with the colour of your lipstick

Color your lip according to the occasion and time. When at work or during daytime, opt for light shades of lipstick as you want the whole effect to a subtle one. During night or when at a drama or a party flaunt your lips with the darkest shade of lipstick which suits you.

By following these tips the task of selecting the perfect lipstick won’t turn out to be that difficult. Color your lips right and be sure to turn into that gorgeous diva you always wanted to be.

Natural Ways to Keep Hair Healthy and Gorgeous

The best method to ensure your hair stays silky and shiny are to make simple, tried and tested means a part of your routine.
Each strand of approximately 100,000 hairs growing on your head will stay there for an average of 4 and half years. So when it comes to healthy hair, regular ongoing attention and care pays off.

Gently Does It

Treating your hair gently will result in less split ends and damage, and keep your hair looking great. Use a wide tooth comb with rounded ends to loosen tangles before a fine one, and comb carefully starting with the ends and working back to the roots.
Hair Care Products
Choose natural, gentle shampoos and conditioners that will not strip your hair of the oils that keep it strong, flexible and shiny. Many shampoos contain artificial ingredients that can be toxic to your body. Read labels on products to inform yourself and avoid products containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These are harsh detergents that make the product lather well, but may cause long term damage to your hair and possibly your health as a whole.
Massage the Scalp
This not only feels great and relieves stress, but encourages the circulation of blood in the scalp which in turn promotes the growth and maintenance of healthy hair. Make small circles with your fingertips on your scalp, using firm pressure. Work from the hairline backwards to the nape of the neck.
Protect from the Elements
Sun is often the cause of dry and brittle hair, as UV light breaks down hair protein. Wind can also damage the hair, as can pollutants in the air. When your environment includes elements that could be stressful to your hair, choose to cover it with a scarf or hat, or tie it back so that less of it is exposed.

Hair Therapy

To replenish oils in your hair without greasiness, put a few drops of essential oil on your hairbrush and comb through. This can increase the shine and resilience of your hair, and will make it smell fantastic. Rosemary Oil is particularly recommended for sleek and beautiful hair.
Fabulous hair is easy to achieve when you know how!

Teammates fixed every game, Pak cricketer tells NOTW

In a sensational twist to the spot-fixing scandal, former Pakistan opener Yasir Hameed on Sunday claimed that his teammates were involved in fixing "almost every match" even as a fourth touring Pakistani player came under investigation in the scam which grew in proportion after fresh

disclosures.

Even before the dust could settle over the suspension of the tainted trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir, British tabloid News of the World, came out with more explosive revelations.

While the tabloid gave startling details of the conversations and the modus operandi of the bookies, the report of a Sri Lankan player being investigated by the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit added to the crisis facing the game.

Hameed told the tabloid that he had been asked by a bookmaker to help fix a Test for 100,000 pounds, but he turned down the money and said his teammates were fixing almost every match.

"They've been caught. Only the ones that get caught are branded crooks. They were doing it (fixing) in almost every match. God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages", Hameed is quoted as saying in the sting interview which was released by the tabloid.

But within a few hours after the video of the interview was released, Hameed denied having given any such interview, saying he could never think of accusing his teammates of fixing matches.

"I have told the team management that the newspaper is claiming that I have given them an interview. This is not correct. I deny it", he said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board was huddled in an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation amid speculation that the team's tour of England could be called off to avoid further embarrassment.

Pakistan has all along maintained that its players were innocent and the entire episode was a conspiracy to alienate the country, which has not hosted any international cricket since last year's Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan team.

Pakistan's High Commissioner in Britain Wajid Shamsul Hasan has called the suspension of its players unethical and threatened to sue the ICC if the trio is eventually found innocent.

Hameed, on the other hand, could face disciplinary action from the ICC for violating its anti-corruption code of conduct which states that it is an offence if a player "fails to disclose to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (without undue delay) full details of any approaches ... that would amount to a breach of the anti-corruption code".

Taliban attack Pakistan amid devastating floods

Pro-Taliban Pakistani militants are trying to create a sectarian rift, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Saturday, as a new wave of violence piled pressure on a government already struggling with a flood crisis.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for bomb attacks on two Shiite rallies that killed 33 people in Lahore on Wednesday and 65 in the city of Quetta on Friday.

The attacks ended a lull after devastating floods that affected 20 million people. Pakistani officials said before the attacks that any major violence at such a difficult time was likely to cause deep popular resentment against the militants.

On Friday, Pakistan's Taliban also threatened to launch attacks in the United States and Europe "very soon," two days after Washington added the group, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, to its "foreign terrorist organizations" list.

Malik said al-Qaida-linked militants were trying to whip up sectarianism after taking a beating in their strongholds in the country's northwest in a string of military offensives.

"Sectarianism that has been there for 62 years [since the creation of Pakistan], they stoked it again," he told reporters.

Warning that militants would launch attacks again "wherever there is a vulnerable situation," he said "they are using it as a weapon to terrorize people."

Thousands have been killed in sectarian violence by both majority Sunni and minority Shiite sects in the past two decades. Shiite violence has largely declined in recent years. The Taliban and al-Qaida are Sunnis.

"These militant groups think they can create conflict through sectarianism. But that has not happened," said political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi.

He saw little hope, however, that popular resentment against the militants could undermine them, as happened in Iraq, where people turned against al-Qaida over its violent methods.

"They are not looking for support," he said. "They want to destabilize the situation. That is their only consideration."

In Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, shops shut as the city went into mourning. People said they were in despair over Pakistan's many problems.

"On the one hand, poor people have been stricken by the floods, and on the other hand we are having these blasts. All businesses are finished. What is going to become of this country?" said Haji Abdul Baqi, a rickshaw driver in Quetta.

Malik said the TTP, al-Qaida and the Sunni Muslim Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, one of the most violent anti-Shiite groups with roots in the central Punjab province, were all part of the same organization.

Pakistan has been under U.S. pressure to take tougher action against militants, while the U.S. has also stepped up missile strikes by pilotless aircraft against militant targets in Pakistani tribal areas since the start of 2010.

On Saturday, at least four militants were killed in the North Waziristan tribal region, intelligence officials said.

One intelligence official said they were from the Haqqani network, which operates against U.S.-led forces across the frontier in Afghanistan. Two drone strikes on Friday killed 13 militants, including two foreigners, in North Waziristan.

LSU Football:GameDay Live: LSU-North Carolina

LSU Football:GameDay Live: LSU-North Carolina:Researchers from the North Carolina secretary of state office have subpoenaed Tar Heels defensive struggle Marvin Austin, a person familiar with the situation said on Friday.

The man says the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still ongoing. Austin is one of 13 players who did not travel with a 18-place Tar Heels in Atlanta knife Saturday against LSU № 21 from behind the probe NCAA.

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall office is considering whether North Carolina sports agent laws were violated as a result of the investigation NCAA football program of the school.

Probe NCAA initially focused on whether Austin and receiver Greg Little received improper benefits from agents, and now empower academic violations.

George Jeter, a spokesman for Secretary of State office, declined to comment on the subpoena.

“All I can say is an active, ongoing investigation at this time,” he said.

Earlier Friday, the school said he told Austin, defensive end Robert Quinn and Michael McAdoo, cornerbacks Kendric Burney and Charles Brown, cornerback and receiver Greg Little unacceptable “for violation of school and / or NCAA rules.”

Another six players – the top tailbacks Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston safety Brian Gupton, Da’Norris Searcy and Jonathan Smith and defensive end Linwan Euwell – held on the sidelines during the investigation.

North Carolina also reported three other players – linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter and safety Deunta Williams – did not go with the team as the school met with the NCAA on their status. Sturdivant and Carter were later cleared and went to Atlanta on Friday night. Nonetheless, Williams remained on the sidelines because he wanted to NCAA for more information before making a decision on his status.

News Tar Heels meant to be without at least 6 starters from the defense, which ranks among the best in the country last season, including all of its secondary.

“We are disappointed by the choice of players have denied them the opportunity to participate in the contest with his teammates and to the University of North Carolina, coach Butch Davis said in a statement. “Our coaches and players a huge problem this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be happy to face LSU”.

It is unclear how many games Quinn, McAdoo, Bernie, Brown, Little and Austin will be missed. Announcement of a heavy blow to the program, which entered the fourth season of Davis in a position to fight for the championship of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Optimism built since January, when Austin, Little, Bernie, Sturdivant, Carter and Williams announced they would return to school for his senior season instead of entering the draft NFL.

Few top receiver the team and the rest have joined this group Quinn – Jr. who is considered high in the first round to select – on defense, which returned nine starters from the unit, which is among the best in the last season in the country.

Davis was suspended indefinitely for violating the rules Austin team environment.

“We continue to work with the staff, the National Council to address these issues of admissibility,” Athletic Director Dick Baddour said in a statement. “NCAA is focused on each situation on a case by case. Together we are working to determine their status as a thorough and fair process as possible.”

There were similar agent-related research at the National Council of Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, with links to the South Beach party attended by players from several schools this year. Gamecocks have suspended tight end Weslye Saunders for violation of rules related commands during the Crimson Tide defensive end Marcel Dareus was barred for two games for taking about $ 2,000 in improper benefits during two visits Miami.

North Carolina is one of 42 states and the federal government, which has laws governing contacts between sports agents and college athletes. The state requires agents to register and prohibits them from offering gifts to the signing of the contract. Violations can result in criminal or civil liability.

In July, Marshall’s office sent a letter to more than 100 agents registered with the state, notifying him of the investigation and instructing them not to destroy records. She then said that her office can not punish the athletes, but planned to talk to them about their behavior and interaction with the agents.

ngelina Jolie needs your help

Get your low down on what's happening in the world of Hollywood, right here!

Angelina Jolie, the UNHCR Ambassador, has released a video appealing for greater support for Pakistan flood victims.

The actress has already donated 100,000 dollars for the relief of flood victims.

'These are not just humanitarian crises. This is an economic and a social catastrophe,' the Daily Times quoted her as saying.

The floods have left one-fifth of Pakistan under water and have affected an estimated 17 million people.

UNHCR is one of the numerous UN agencies that are on grounds with Pakistan in trying to provide relief to the flood victims, many of whom face a long wait before they can return to their homes and livelihoods.

'The more support we can give, the greater number of tents, food, clean water and medication will get to the people in need,' she added.

UNHCR has revised its section of wider appeal from 41 million dollars to 120 million dollars, as the needs of the flood victims continue to outpace the ability of aid groups to respond.

Quetta suicide attack toll rises to 65

Paramilitary soldiers secure the site of a suicide bomb attack that targeted a Shia Muslim rally in Quetta on September 3.
QUETTA: The death toll from Friday’s suicide attack on a procession here rose to 65 after nine people succumbed to their injuries on Saturday.

Hospital sources said the condition of some of the injured, including two cameramen of news channels, was serious.

Fifty-three victims of the suicide attack on the Al Quds day procession were buried in Marriabad graveyard in the presence of thousands of mourners. Their Namaz-i-Janaza was offered in an imambargah on Alamdar road.

A large number of security personnel were deployed on routes leading to the graveyard.

All government and private schools were closed in Quetta.

Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani has ordered a judicial inquiry into the attack.

Officials said the judicial tribunal would comprise judges of the Balochistan High Court and their names would be announced in a couple of days.

The chief minister also announced that a ministerial commission would be set up to suggest ways of stopping such incidents in future. The commission, headed by provincial Home Minister Mir Zafarullah Zahri, will comprise Ministers Jan Ali Changezi and Ainullah Shams. Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani will be its secretary. Mr Raisani said that more ministers would be included in the commission.

Three teams, headed by Quetta CCPO Abid Notkani, have started investigations into the suicide bombing. Police and security personnel raided various places in and around Quetta on Saturday and took 20 suspects into custody. “We have rounded up 20 people for questioning,” a senior police officer told Dawn.

STRIKE: A complete strike was observed in Quetta on Saturday. Heavy contingents of police and Frontier Corps continued patrolled in and around the city. FC and police personnel were also deployed at important points and government installations.

A spokesman for the Shia community claimed that 12 people were killed in the bomb blast while the others died because of firing by security forces and terrorists.

40 villages flooded near Dadu

A breach at an embankment near Mehar has inundated more than 40 villages in three union councils. -File Photo
DADU: A 10-metre breach at an embankment in a village near Mehar widened to 60 metres on Saturday evening, inundating more than 40 villages in three union councils.

The water from the breach at Suprio, in Mochi village, was now threatening Mehar itself. It was 10 kilometres from the town at Saturday midnight. Mehar was facing a danger from another side as the water released from a breach in Khairpur Nathan Shah was also advancing on the town.

Dadu DCO Mohammad Iqbal advised residents of the district and the internally displaced people to move to safe places. About 80 per cent of the residents have already abandoned Mehar.

Because of a shortage of vehicles, people were seen travelling on foot and riding donkey carts on Naseerabad, Larkana and Betto Jatoi roads.

Hamal lake has started overflowing from its spillways at the Main Nara Valley (MNV) drain, posing a threat to Dadu.

Qambar-Shahdadkot DCO Yaseen Shar said that gates of the Hamal lake was lifted by one foot on Saturday night to allow the water to discharge in the MNV drain and release the pressure on the lake.

OFFICIALS THRASHED: The guards and armed men of PPP MNA Dr Talat Hussain Mahesar and MPA Fiaz Hussain Butt thrashed chief engineer of right bank of Sukkur barrage Agha Aijaz, chief engineer of small dams Khalid Hussain Memon, Larkana superintending engineer Shafaqat Hussain Wadho when they visited Suprio bund to plug a breach.

The officials left the site in protest and went to the Betto Jatoi rest house. However, Sindh Labour Minister Amir Nawab, former MPA Kazi Shafique Ahmed Mahessar and MPA Fiaz Butt persuaded them to start work.

Later, irrigation officials, administration and elected representatives decided to give a 500-foot wide cut in Mehar drain to divert the water to Khairpur Nathan Shah town and Johi branch (canal). The K.N.S town has already been flooded.

MPA Fiaz Hussain accused the irrigation officials of not dumping stones at the Suprio embankment which resulted in a breach in Mochi village.

Chief engineer Agha Aijaz said the water level at the breach site of Suprio bund was high and it could not be plugged. He said that irrigation officials had sought army protection so that they could work without any fear.

The floodwater reached near Sita Road town in Dadu. The residents have collected Rs1.5 million to build a ring-embankment and save the town.

Floodwaters from Kari Mori and Bello Patan have inundated 30 more villages and were moving towards Johi town. Water from breaches in the MNV drain developed leakages in the Johi town ring-embankment, inundating 10km Johi-Bhan road and disconnecting the town from other areas.

A flood warning was issued in the town on Saturday. About 40 per cent of 75,000 population of Johi town has already moved to mountainous areas.

The residents of Johi held a demonstration in protest against the administration’s failure to provide them transport and shift them to safe places.

Meanwhile, the floodwater of MNV drain inundated an airbase and two wells of multinational oil and gas company BHP and its two wells from right side of MNV drain in taluka Johi.

According to sources, BHP stopped operation and reduced supply of gas to KESE, SSGC and SNGPL from its Zamzama gas field on Saturday. But a BHP spokesman denied that the supply had been reduced.

Railways has started a special train service from Radhan to Larkana to shift flood-affected people to safe areas.

Senior officials in the region and not a hostage when the shooting started

Both Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, who decided on the "wear-him-out" strategy, and Manila police chief Rodolfo Magtibay, commander of the police forces surrounding the Quirino Grandstand, were absent from the scene when hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza opened fire on his hostages.

Lim had gotten hungry and invited Magtibay to a nearby restaurant known for siopao and fried crabs.

Speaking on Friday before the five-member Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) tasked to probe the hostage crisis, Lim said that he decided to go to the Emerald Garden Restaurant even after hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza fired a warning shot — signaling that negotiations had bogged down and Mendoza’s mood had changed for the worse.

"Hindi pa po ako nanananghalian kaya pumunta ako sa Emerald. Kaya dun na lang kami sa Emerald, para dun ang extension ng command post (I hadn’t had lunch yet so I went to Emerald. We decided to stay at the Emerald, so that the command post’s extension would also be there)," Lim told the panel.

"Nothing was happening," he also said.

Lim added that before leaving the Quirino Grandstand area, he told Manila Police District (MPD) head Chief Superintendent Rodolfo Magtibay that the strategy was to wear out Mendoza until he had no choice but to free the hostages.

Magtibay was the overall ground commander during the hostage crisis.

Instead of wearing down, Mendoza snapped, triggered perhaps by any number of events whose impact was apparently underestimated by Lim, a former Manila police chief himself known for his gruff demeanor.

From Quirino to Emerald

"Mga 6:45 p.m. ay nagpaalam na ako kay General Magtibay. Sabi ko sa kanya, 'O, general, magkaka-tagalan ito. We have to play a waiting game, tingnan natin baka ito (Mendoza) mapuyat, mapagod, baka mag-abot ng kinaumagahan'," Lim said.

(Around 6:45 p.m., I told General Magtibay I had to go. I told him, 'General, this will take a while. We have to play a waiting game, let’s see, Mendoza might get sleepy, tired, it might take until morning.’)

Lim then invited Magtibay to join him at the restaurant before 7 p.m. Interior Undersecretary Rico Puno and National Capital Region Police Office head Director Leocadio Santiago were with them at the Emerald restaurant, but the mayor did not mention that President Benigno Aquino III was also there.

Aquino himself said earlier he was at the restaurant, some three blocks away from the Quirino Grandstand area, to monitor the situation and meet with other officials handling the crisis.

During Friday’s proceedings, it was also revealed that four of the eight hostages killed in the hostage crisis may have died during the MPD assault against Mendoza. (See related story: 4 hostages may have died at the height of hostage crisis assault)

"Four of the Hong Kong nationals sustained gunfire as a result of the assault," said IIRC member Roan Libarios, citing information given by Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Jesus Verzosa during an earlier executive session.

Tentative and visibly nervous throughout his testimony, Magtibay neither denied nor confirmed Libarios’ charge, saying only that the MPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team faced a "very hard" situation and they "tried their best."
The first shots fired

Both Magtibay and Lim were thus absent from the Quirino Grandstand when the hostage crisis began to unravel, as Mendoza opened fire inside the bus, presumably killing the first two hostages as reported live by radio station RMN’s anchor Michael Rogas.

"Don't you think it was poor judgment on your part to remove the ground commander from the crime scene?" Libarios asked Lim.

"I did not order him (Magtibay), I invited him. He should have informed me that the situation was volatile," the mayor replied, adding that he would not have invited the ground commander to the restaurant had he known that the situation was bad.

Lim also said he was only monitoring the situation through his mobile phone because there was no television in the restaurant. "Nagpakuha ako ng TV, eh ang tagal bago dumating nung TV, tapos sira pa (I sent for a TV, but it took a long time to arrive, and then we found out it wasn’t working)."

Magtibay only returned to the grandstand when the first shots were fired, Lim admitted.

"General Magtibay received a call na nagkaka-putukan na nga doon. Kaya kinailangan niya nang umalis (General Magtibay received a call saying that there was already shooting, and so he had to go)," he said.

At around 7:20 p.m., Mendoza began firing the first gunshots a few minutes after a live broadcast showed his brother, SPO2 Gregorio Mendoza, being handcuffed and forcibly carried into a police vehicle at a nearby police community precinct. (See: Massacre in Nation’s Heart: Timeline of Manila bus siege)

Lim has admitted ordering the handcuffing of Gregorio.

The driver of the Hong Thai Travel tourist bus managed to escape from the bus after the initial gunshots. He ran toward policemen and frantically announced that all the passengers had been shot dead.

During this time, Magtibay said he was already on the ground and ordered the MPD's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to launch an assault and secure the hostages.

"It came to my mind that I have to act immediately to save the remaining hostages," said Magtibay, who was grilled by the panel before Lim.

What followed was the bungled hostage rescue attempt of the ill-equipped and unprepared Manila police. Eight tourists from Hong Kong were killed.

Wear him out or take him out?

DILG Undersecretary Puno earlier in the day told the panel that he had treated the hostage situation as a local crisis to be handled by Lim, whose plan was to resolve the crisis by tiring out Mendoza. (See: DILG's Puno: We planned to wear out hostage-taker)

Puno said it was considered a local crisis because it occurred in Manila, and Mendoza was a former member of the MPD.

"The general idea there was to save lives, even that of the hostage-taker. If we can save the life of even the hostage-taker, then we would be very successful," he added. There were several opportunities for the two negotiators to overpower Mendoza, who had his firearm hanging by his side. Snipers could have also taken him out as he stood in the bus doorway.

The police, instead, allowed him to extend the drama to its bloody conclusion.

For his part, Lim defended the MPD from widespread criticism that they were inept and ill-prepared to handle a hostage crisis of such magnitude.

"The police officers headed by General Magtibay did their best to ensure the safety of the hostages, and in spite of the lack of the necessary equipment — the SWAT team, in spite of its deficiencies — they really tried their very best to make entry into the bus. But unfortunately, they were unable to penetrate the bus at the earliest possible time," said Lim.

However, in the eyes of much of the world watching on live television, "Manila's finest" were staging a tragic comedy routine, complete with a slip-sliding retreat from inside the bus when Mendoza fired at them.

The police violated nearly all the principles of a successful assault. They were slow when they should have been swift, there was no element of surprise, and they weren't even wearing masks to protect themselves from the teargas they lobbed inside the bus to flush Mendoza out.

It is still not clear why Magtibay chose the local police to attack the bus when an elite special action force was on standby behind the grandstand.

"May mga tao at sibilyan na they do not know the tension, the pressure, the stress in a hostage situation. Kung minsan po ang layman's point of view ng mga tao ay kakaiba dun sa line of thinking ng mga police operatives. First and foremost, you cannot take it from them [policemen] that they did their best but their best was not good enough," the mayor added.

Situation was 'underestimated, misread'

Justice Sec. Leila de Lima had a different reaction, however, to Lim’s disclosures.

Overall, "there was an underestimation and misreading of the situation" by the local crisis committee, especially because Lim left the scene even after Mendoza fired a warning shot, De Lima said.

"You were repeatedly saying na wala namang nangyari…[pero] noong nag-warning shot si Mendoza, nalaman niyo na yung Ombudsman letter was rejected by him, and so in spite of that, sa tingin niyo walang significant na nangyari?" asked De Lima.

(You were repeatedly saying that nothing was happening… but when Mendoza fired that warning shot, you realized that that the Ombudsman letter was rejected by him, and so in spite of that, you still thought nothing significant was happening?)

Lim replied: "Yes, ma'am."

Ombudsman connection

Meanwhile, the IIRC will invite Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez to answer further questions regarding the role of her office in the hostage crisis. (See: Ombudsman to be invited to hostage tragedy probe)

Magtibay told the IIRC earlier that he called to ask the Office of the Ombudsman to release a decision on Mendoza’s motion for reconsideration of his dismissal from duty. The Ombudsman responded with a letter assuring a review of Mendoza’s case in 10 days.
